Did the vibrant energy of Konkuk University draw you to Gwangjin-gu? Or perhaps the serene beauty of Children’s Grand Park? Gwangjin-gu, nestled on the north bank of the Han River, is a district of contrasts. It seamlessly blends the youthful exuberance of a university town with the quiet charm of residential areas. Gwangjin-gu was carved from Seongdong District in 1995. This relatively young district boasts a rich history, reaching back to the Three Kingdoms era. Imagine Goguryeo, Baekje, and Silla armies clashing for control of this strategically vital land. Gwangjin-gu served as a transportation hub even then, with ferries like Gwangnaru (meaning “wide dock”) facilitating trade and travel. Centuries later, during the Joseon Dynasty, this area, then part of Goyang-gun, became a royal grazing land and training ground for the national army. The echoes of horses’ hooves and soldiers’ drills once filled the air. Fast forward to the Japanese occupation, and Gwangjin-gu, under the name Ttukdo-myeon, became part of Seoul’s urban sprawl. The district’s modern identity truly began to form in 1995. It was then that Gwangjin-gu, with its blend of bustling commercial centers and tranquil residential streets, emerged. Today, Gwangjin-gu is a vibrant tapestry woven with threads of history, education, and entertainment. From the trendy shops of Konkuk University’s Rodeo Street to the peaceful pathways of Children’s Grand Park, Gwangjin-gu invites you to explore its many facets. And who knows, perhaps you’ll discover your own special piece of Gwangjin-gu’s story.
