Seolleung is part of the Seonjeongneung burial ground. It holds stories of kings and queens. This UNESCO World Heritage site offers a serene escape from Seoul’s urban hustle.

Queen Jeonghyeon lived from 1462 to 1530. She became King Seongjong’s third wife. More importantly she gave birth to the future King Jungjong. This cemented her place in history. She outlived her husband by 35 years.

Notice Queen Jeonghyeon’s tomb has a stone fence. It encircles the mound. This is different from her husband’s tomb. His has a retaining wall. Statues of officials and horses stand guard. They show respect. They symbolize her power.

South of the tombs stands a T-shaped shrine. Auxiliary buildings stored materials. These were for commemorative ceremonies. These rituals honored the queen’s memory.

Queen Jeonghyeon had a passion for Buddhism. She supported the nearby Bongeunsa Temple. It shows her spiritual side.

King Seongjong is also buried here at Seolleung. He reigned as the ninth monarch of Joseon. He lived from 1457 to 1494. He helped complete the Gyeongguk daejeon. This was the national code of laws.

King Jungjong, the 11th monarch, rests in the easternmost part. His story is also connected to this place. Queen Munjeong moved his tomb here later.
