What echoes within these walls? It’s the silent screams of Korean patriots at Seodaemun Prison History Hall. This hall stands as a stark reminder of Korea’s turbulent past. It commemorates those who fought for independence.

Seodaemun Prison History Hall wasn’t always a museum. It first opened in 1908 as Gyeongseong Prison. Japan built it during its colonial rule. The prison housed independence movement activists. As more activists were imprisoned, the facility expanded. In 1912, its name changed to Seodaemun Prison.

Imagine the fear. Picture the unwavering resolve of those imprisoned here. They faced torture and execution for their beliefs. Yu Gwansun, a female patriot, was tortured and killed in its basement jail cell.

Eighty years later, in 1992, the prison transformed. It became Seodaemun Independence Park. This park honored the Korean patriots who sacrificed everything. Only seven buildings remained to preserve their historical importance. Three prison buildings and the execution site became designated Historic Sites.

In 1998, another transformation occurred. Seodaemun Prison History Hall opened. It was built to educate the public. It highlights Korea’s independence struggle. It shows the sacrifices made to achieve freedom.

The Seodaemun Prison History Hall consists of several key areas. There is a historic exhibition hall. You’ll also find a central prison and jail cells. A hospital and patriot memorial stand here too. Don’t forget the execution room. A corpse removal tunnel is a chilling reminder. A watchtower overlooks the grounds.

The Exhibition Hall was once the Administration and Security Office. Inside, you’ll discover text, videos, and relics. These items tell the museum’s history. The exhibits commemorate imprisoned independence activists and pro-democracy fighters.

Other facilities remain on-site. There’s a leper’s building and an exercise yard. You can also see the kitchen barrack. These remnants paint a vivid picture of life within the prison walls.

When you enter Seodaemun Prison History Hall, consider the weight of history. Think about the courage displayed within these walls. It is a place of remembrance. It is a tribute to the Korean patriots who fought for freedom. The Seodaemun Prison History Hall stands as a powerful symbol of resilience and the enduring spirit of independence.
