Imagine a time capsule. It is filled with the Earth’s history and evolution. This capsule is the Seodaemun Natural History Museum.

The Seodaemun Natural History Museum is Seoul’s first natural history museum. A government agency established it. It opened in 2003. The museum sits at the foot of Ansan Mountain. This natural setting adds to its appeal.

Inside the Seodaemun Natural History Museum lies a world of discovery. Real specimens of minerals, rocks, and fossils are on display. You will also find models, including life-size dinosaurs. These exhibits show the origins of life on Earth.

The museum has four floors. Each floor offers a unique perspective. The first floor greets you with a giant Acrocanthosaurus skeleton. This dinosaur lived 115 to 105 million years ago. It was a fierce carnivore. Above it hangs a sperm whale model. Sperm whales have brains five times heavier than humans. Also there is a Pteranodon, a Tupuxuara, a Xiphactinus, and a Pachyrhizodus hanging above. The first floor also has the Human and Nature Hall. It teaches about ecosystems and endangered species.

The second floor explores the origin and birth of life. It explains the evolution of life forms. Scientists believe life evolved from lifeless forms. The exhibits cover the Paleozoic Era, Mesozoic, and Cenozoic eras. You can see marine mammals and learn about the emergence of mankind.

The third floor focuses on Earth’s environment. It delves into the birth of Earth. An explosion in space created gas clouds. These clouds formed planetesimals. Planetesimals collided and created stars. This process led to the solar system and Earth.

A special treat awaits on this floor. You can watch a stereoscopic movie about Earth’s creation. The movie plays every ten minutes. Special glasses are required for viewing.

The Seodaemun Natural History Museum is a place for all ages. It is family-friendly and educational. The museum’s exhibits are arranged chronologically. This makes natural history easy to understand.

Take a walk around Ansan Mountain after your museum visit. A wooden pathway circles the mountain. You can also find a waterfall there. It is a great way to connect with nature. The Seodaemun Natural History Museum is more than a museum. It is a journey through time. It celebrates the harmony of humans and nature.
