This educational and cultural park holds more than just pretty flowers. It’s a poignant memorial a museum a tribute to the fight for independence. Nearly half a million visitors explore its grounds every year.

The name itself Seodaemun means West Great Gate. It’s a reminder of Donuimun one of Seoul’s Eight Gates. That gate was demolished in 1915. Yet the name lives on a legacy in stone. Seodaemun Prison once stood here. A notorious place of imprisonment for independence activists. Today it’s the Seodaemun Prison Museum. A chilling museum recounting the struggles of those imprisoned.

Within Seodaemun Independence Park’s boundaries you’ll find more than just the prison museum. There’s Independence Gate also known as Dongnimmun. Independence Square marks the park’s southwest entrance.
