What’s cooler than a refrigerator? How about an entire neighborhood named after ancient refrigerators? Welcome to Seobinggo-dong in Seoul. This fascinating area owes its name to its history as the site of royal ice storage houses. “Seobinggo” literally translates to “west ice storage house”. These weren’t your average iceboxes. They played a vital role in Joseon Dynasty life.

Seobinggo-dong held one of two royal ice houses in Seoul. The other, Dongbinggo (east ice storage house), was located in modern-day Oksu-dong. During winter, workers painstakingly harvested ice from the frozen Han River. They then stored the ice in these massive structures. The ice provided much-needed relief during Seoul’s sweltering summers. Imagine the logistics involved. Cutting and transporting huge blocks of ice was an enormous undertaking. These ice houses were crucial for preserving food and providing cool refreshments for the royal court. King Taejo himself established the Seobinggo during the Joseon Dynasty’s early years, around 1396.

The ice storage industry thrived for centuries in Seobinggo-dong. It wasn’t until the 1950s, with the advent of modern refrigeration technology, that the practice began to decline. The old ways faded, replaced by the hum of electric refrigerators. Yet, the legacy of Seobinggo-dong’s chilly past lives on. Today, a marker at Seobinggo-ro 51-gil and an information sign across the river at Hangang Banpo Park stand as testaments to this unique history. They remind us of a time when ice was a precious commodity and Seobinggo-dong a hub of its preservation. Seobinggo-dong transformed from a center of ice storage to a modern neighborhood. But its name still whispers of a colder past. A past when the frozen Han River provided cool respite and Seobinggo-dong was the keeper of its bounty.
