This plaza is an extension of the church itself. When festivities overflow, the plaza becomes part of the sacred space. Massive, transparent doors open onto the plaza, blurring the lines between inside and out. Sliding steel screens offer privacy when needed, modulating the connection between the sacred and the secular. Inside, the Señor de la Misericordia embraces light. Natural light pours in from multiple sources, creating a dynamic interplay of color and shadow. Three small chapels, each facing a different direction, bathe in the shifting hues of the sun. Above the altar, a large skylight illuminates a Latin cross carved into the wall. The light seems to emanate from the cross itself, a powerful symbol of faith. The architects, Moneo Brock, prioritized sustainability. Natural ventilation, aided by the towering bell tower, keeps the church cool in Monterrey’s heat. Daylight floods the interior, minimizing the need for artificial light. Even the acoustics were carefully considered. Diffusing wood battens, strategically placed throughout the nave, ensure optimal sound quality. The Señor de la Misericordia is more than just a building.
