Señor de Huanca

“A volcano of love and a refreshing manantial of pardon”, whispered the old woman to her grandson. They stood before the Señor de Huanca, a humble place of worship nestled in the heart of Arequipa. The grandson, young and restless, shifted his weight. “A volcano? What does that even mean, abuela?” The woman smiled, her eyes crinkling at the corners. “It means,” she began, “that this place, this Señor de Huanca, holds a power unlike any other.” She pointed to a nondescript stone, almost hidden amongst the flickering candles and vibrant flowers. “Centuries ago,” she continued, her voice dropping to a conspiratorial whisper, “that stone bore witness to a miracle.” A young man, Diego Quispe, sought refuge in a nearby cave, fleeing from the cruelty of his Spanish captors. He prayed for deliverance, for a sign from God. And then, in a blinding flash of light, Jesus Christ appeared before him. Christ, wounded and bleeding, spoke to Diego, choosing him as a vessel to spread his message of love and forgiveness. The spot where Diego encountered the divine became a beacon of hope, a place where prayers were whispered and miracles were sought. This was the legacy of the Señor de Huanca.
