Lost in the bustling streets of Osaka’s Hirano-ku you stumble upon Senkoji Temple. Its history whispers from the weathered stones. Senkoji Temple a Koyasan Shingon sect temple stands proudly. Its origins are shrouded in some mystery. It’s believed Prince Shotoku built Yakushido during the Asuka period 710-794. The town of Hirano grew around this early structure. After the Onin War in 1467 Hirano flourished as a moat city. This protected it from further warfare.
Senkoji Temple played a role in the Osaka Winter Battle of 1614. Tokugawa Hidetada’s army positioned itself nearby. The temple survived the Osaka Summer Battle the following year. Remarkably it even withstood the devastating Osaka Great Air Raid of 1945. This air raid involved eight bombing attacks killing over 10000 civilians. Senkoji Temple remained unscathed.
The main hall dating back to 1576 is one of Osaka Prefecture’s oldest wooden structures. It was rebuilt in 1661 after suffering fire damage during the Osaka Summer Battle. Inside you’ll find the main statue Yakushi Nyorai. This is only open to the public twice a year on January 8th and during Mid-Autumn Jugoya.
Within the main hall is a unique Jizo statue. This statue has only its head remaining. This intriguing head is called Kubi no Jizoson. Legend connects it to the Osaka battles between the Tokugawa and Toyotomi forces. Sanada Nobushige Yukimura a Toyotomi general tried to assassinate Ieyasu Tokugawa. He planted a landmine in the Jizo Hall.
The mine exploded. Ieyasu was unharmed as he was not in the hall. The explosion destroyed the Jizo hall. Only the head of the statue was found in the precincts of Senkoji Temple 300 meters away. This head is displayed on August 23rd and 24th.
Senkoji Temple also houses the Jigokudo Hell Hall and Hotoke no Kuni the Land of the Spirits. Jigokudo established in 1989 features statues of King Yama and demons. It offers an interactive experience where visitors answer questions to determine their afterlife destination. Hotoke no Kuni houses over 160 Buddhist statues including one of Kobo Daishi. It features a beautiful stained-glass mandala where visitors can meditate.
