A humble chapel stands before you. This is the Santuário de Nossa Senhora da Aparecida. Its story begins not with grand pronouncements but with whispers of legend.
For generations people have journeyed to this sanctuary. They come seeking solace and answers. The sanctuary’s origins are shrouded in mystery. Legend speaks of a hermit. He lived in a nearby dry mine shaft. He was kind to children and animals. He carried a small statue of the Virgin Mary. He’d show it when he begged for alms. One day he vanished.
Years later strange lights appeared. Lightning bolts and falling stars illuminated the mine. Villagers and the parish priest investigated. They unearthed the hermit’s belongings. There nestled amongst his simple possessions was the statue. It was miraculously unharmed. Thus the Virgin Mary was christened Nossa Senhora Aparecida.
The original chapel was likely built in the 18th century. A significant expansion occurred in the 20th century. This added a chancel annex and support buildings. The present sanctuary is a lovely structure. Its rectangular plan includes a nave chancel annex and bell tower. Its whitewashed walls are punctuated by pilasters and pyramidal pinnacles. The main facade features a simple portal topped by a niche. The niche houses a statue of the Virgin Mary.
The interior is equally charming. A high choir is accessible from the bell tower. The chancel boasts a stunning 20th-century altarpiece. It’s painted wood and faux marble. It follows late Baroque models.
The sanctuary’s setting is also remarkable. It sits on a platform. It offers stunning views of the surrounding valleys and villages. The site’s layout includes terraced gardens and a retaining wall. There’s even a smaller chapel built into the retaining wall.
Every year in mid-August a large pilgrimage takes place. It’s a centuries-old tradition. This event honors Nossa Senhora Aparecida. The festival features religious processions. One procession includes the largest andor in Portugal. It’s 22.52 meters long. The andor is carried by around 80 men. Devotees also fulfill promises. They crawl on their knees to the sanctuary. They may even wear shrouds and carry votive offerings.
