Was Seneca Village a forgotten utopia? Stand here now where once thrived a vibrant community. Imagine a bustling settlement of predominantly African-American landowners. This was Seneca Village a haven established in 1825 near what is now Central Park’s Upper West Side. It was the first such community in New York City. At its peak around 225 residents called Seneca Village home. They built three churches two schools and three cemeteries. The village wasn’t exclusively African-American. Irish and German immigrants also found a place within its borders.

Seneca Village’s name itself is a mystery. Some believe it references Seneca the Younger the Roman philosopher. Others point to the Seneca Native American nation. Yet another theory suggests a link to the West African nation of Senegal. Its existence was unfortunately short-lived. In 1857 the city government used eminent domain. They forcibly removed the villagers to make way for Central Park. All homes and institutions were destroyed.

The story of Seneca Village is a poignant reminder of a community lost. It also reveals the resilience and determination of its residents. They established a thriving community against all odds. They owned land which granted some men the right to vote. This was rare for African-Americans at that time. They built institutions for their children’s education and their spiritual lives. The village provided them refuge from the harsh realities faced by African-Americans in the city. Even amidst discrimination the residents of Seneca Village lived together. They created a sense of community.

Archaeological digs have uncovered remnants of Seneca Village’s existence. These include foundations of homes. They also found artifacts revealing everyday life.
