“A luxurious villa overlooking a tranquil valley.” That’s how one might describe Sendim centuries ago. Today, the Roman villa of Sendim stands as a testament to a bygone era. Sendim in the 4th century was a place of vibrant life, a testament to Roman ingenuity and artistry. The villa, built on a platform overlooking the Vizela River basin, was a sight to behold. Imagine floors adorned with intricate opus signinum, a blend of broken ceramic and mortar that created a smooth, polished surface. Picture vibrant polychrome mosaics, their geometric patterns a kaleidoscope of yellow, black, red, and white. But Sendim tells more than just a story of opulence. Excavations have unearthed a wealth of artifacts – thousands of ceramic fragments that once were part of everyday life, remnants of meals shared and stories told. Luxurious ceramics, glassware, and even bronze coins paint a picture of a community that thrived, traded, and indulged in the finer things. The villa, sadly, succumbed to a great fire in the 6th century. It was abandoned, left to the passage of time. Today, the Roman villa of Sendim is more than just ruins. It’s a window into the past, a whisper of a civilization long gone, yet forever etched in the heart of Portugal.
