Was it really almost 60 years ago that Seminole State College first opened its doors? It’s hard to believe that what’s now a thriving hub of education started as a dream to bring accessible education to Central Florida. Back in the 1960s, Seminole and Orange counties had more than doubled in population, but there wasn’t a single public college in sight. Local leaders, fueled by ambition and the need for higher education, took their plea to the 1965 legislative session. Their voices were heard, and history was made when Governor W. Haydon Burns signed the bill that would pave the way for Seminole State College. Imagine the excitement, the anticipation in the air as Seminole Junior College, as it was then known, prepared to welcome its first cohort of students in August of 1966. Picture the scene: a former citrus grove transformed, albeit temporarily, with ten portable classrooms ready for learning. One of those portables, donated by none other than Walt Disney Co., served as the first student center. This was just a glimpse of the growth and transformation that would come to define Seminole State College. From those humble beginnings, Seminole State has grown into a multi-campus institution, offering not just associate degrees, but also a suite of bachelor’s programs. Think about that journey – from portable classrooms to cutting-edge facilities, a testament to the unwavering commitment to education that Seminole State embodies.
