“Once upon a time” isn’t just a fairy tale beginning. It describes the history of this building. Once upon a time there was a “Maison du Séminaire”. Today we stand before the Saint Paul Hotel.
The Saint Paul Hotel has a rich history. In the 19th century, an old bishop from Nice decided to build a seminary here. It would train future priests. Construction finished around 1843. The seminary included a large building called Maison du Séminaire. A smaller building stood to its west.
Between 1880 and 1881, a new building was added. It was west of the property to house students. An extension was also added north of the main building. Construction of the chapel began at the same time. The exterior was done by 1881. Work inside continued until its consecration in 1891.
Around 1885, the smaller building next to the main one was raised. It became as tall as the main building. Around 1891-1892, a dormitory was added east of the chapel. This is now the diocesan library.
In 1929, the seminary underwent another transformation. Architects Febvre and Deporta led the project. The building was renamed “Le Saint-Paul”.
