Born on January 3rd in Mushongahande Village Guruve Sekuru Tute Chigamba’s life was far from ordinary. Sekuru Sagonda isn’t just a name it’s a legacy. This place holds a piece of that legacy.

Sekuru Chigamba a renowned Zimbabwean mbira player oral historian and ritual specialist left an indelible mark on Zimbabwean culture. His stories nhoroondo are rich with history music and spirituality. He journeyed from his rural beginnings to the bustling city of colonial Salisbury now Harare. He experienced the hardships of migrant labor in Gadzema and Madzongwe.

He witnessed the country’s struggle for independence. Sekuru Chigamba’s life intertwined with the political and social shifts of Zimbabwe. He worked for Albert Amato a Jewish refugee from Rhodes Island. His experiences shaped his music and his understanding of Zimbabwean life. He composed his first mbira song Mutenda Mambo in his father’s honor.

His work extended beyond music. He played a key role in post-war reconciliation ceremonies. He collaborated with ethnomusicologist Lucy Duran and BBC producer Tessa Watts. They worked on a program called Talking Drum featuring music from Nyanehwe Village Rushinga. Sekuru Chigamba’s influence spanned generations. His mbira playing became legendary.

His family’s ensemble the Young Zimbabweans toured internationally showcasing Zimbabwean music. His travels took him to Canada and the United Kingdom. He even picked up his guitar again during a tour in the United States. Sekuru Chigamba’s life wasn’t easy. He faced personal tragedies including the murder of his son Shame Chigamba. Despite these challenges he continued to create and share his music and stories.

He moved his rural home to Mount Darwin in Rushinga. His family’s fortunes improved as he began selling his mbira internationally. He became a vital link between Zimbabwe’s past present and future. This simple chalet called Sekuru Sagonda serves as a reminder. It’s a tribute to a man who embodied the spirit of Zimbabwe. Remember Sekuru Sagonda stands not just as a building but as a symbol.
