Established on January 3 1989, the school was officially opened on April 28 2001. For a while, the students shared grounds with Sekolah Kebangsaan Wangsa Maju Seksyen 1 until 1992. Since then, the school expanded. It now has three blocks of buildings.

In 2012, the school won a sustainability competition. Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Zon R1 Wangsa Maju achieved a notable feat in 2019. It won the National Level Malay Language Debate Competition in the Parliament style.
