Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Taman Selayang is located in Gombak District. It is about 13 km from Kuala Lumpur’s city center. The school opened its doors on January 6, 1986. But its story began long before that.

Can you believe this site was once a former mine? The Majlis Daerah Gombak even used it as a landfill. Today, it is a place of learning.

Why was Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Taman Selayang established here? It sits strategically between several residential areas. These include Taman Selayang, Taman Amaniah and Kampung Sungai Tua. The growing population needed a school.

Initially, it was named Sekolah Menengah Rendah Batu Caves. However, the location of Batu Caves was some distance from the school. So, the name changed to Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Taman Selayang. This reflected its proximity to Taman Selayang. The Selangor Education Department approved the change.

Tuan Haji Ahmat bin Mansor was the first principal. He spearheaded the school’s development. Before this role, he served in education for 25 years. The Selangor Education Department entrusted him with building this school.

In 2017, Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Taman Selayang had 1,555 students. There were 765 boys and 790 girls. The school also had 114 teachers. As of 2021, the school had 1,475 students and 100 teachers.

Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Taman Selayang aims for holistic development. It encourages students to explore their passions. Students can participate in sports, arts, clubs and societies.
