How about we journey back to January 31 2005? That was the day Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Seri Mutiara opened its doors. The school is located in Taman Taynton View Cheras Kuala Lumpur. It began with just 18 teachers. Puan Hajah Sa’amah bt Muhayat was the first principal. There were only 268 students in eight classes.
By 2006 the student population grew to 630. SMK Seri Mutiara students began achieving success. They won the MSSKL Artistic Gymnastics competition. They even earned a gold medal at the MSSM competition.
In July 2007 Puan Hajah Halimah binti Haron became the new principal. She replaced Puan Hajah Sa’amah bt Muhayat. That year CCTV security systems were installed at SMK Seri Mutiara.
2008 saw changes in school administration. Encik Mohd Nazri bin Siweng became Head of Languages. Puan Hajah Rohayah binti Ishak led Technical and Vocational studies. Puan Anita a/p Paramaswaran headed Humanities. Puan Teh Lay Choo became Head of Science.
By 2009 the SMK Seri Mutiara faculty expanded to 92 teachers. Student numbers rose to 1450. Puan Sasikala K.M Nair and Puan Tan Ah Gan became Excellent Teachers. Encik Abdul Aziz bin Md Hashim became Senior Assistant for Administration and Curriculum. Puan Yean Hoor Shian took on student affairs. Encik Mohd Nazri bin Siweng became Senior Assistant for Co-curricular activities. Puan Hajah Rohayah binti Ishak became Senior Assistant for the afternoon session.
In 2010 Puan Rosmalaili binti Nawawi became Head of Technical and Vocational studies. Encik Chee Yu Fook became an Excellent Physical Education Teacher. That year SMK Seri Mutiara won awards. These were for Significant Improvement in Physics Chemistry and Biology. Another was for improved school average grade in the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia exams.
A second computer lab opened in 2011. The PIBG built it. The resource center was also renovated. There was a plan to install air conditioning in all classrooms. A carnival raised RM130000 for this.
In March 2012 Puan Hajah Halimah binti Haron was promoted. She became Head of the Academic Management Sector. Encik Mohd Amir bin Abdul Ghani became the third principal. Air conditioning was installed in all classrooms. A futsal court was built.
In 2013 SMK Seri Mutiara had 1415 students and 83 teachers. The PIBG added ICT equipment in some classrooms. Classroom doors were replaced with iron doors. Air conditioning was installed in the SMK Seri Mutiara Hall. Two rooms became file rooms. Encik Saari bin Md Tahir retired on December 15 2013.
By 2014 the school had 85 teachers and 1356 students. All classrooms received ICT equipment. Two engineering rooms became seminar rooms. The prefects’ room became a space for Civic and Moral Education.
Pn.Yusaslinda bt Mohd Yunus became Head of Humanities in 2015. The school gate was built and opened in February. The gym and ADP room became the Dewan Mesra and Bilik Galeri Ilmu. En.Mohd Amir b Andul Ghani was replaced by Pn.Shabariah bt Mohd Sidik as principal in April 2015. Cik Yong Mee Heng retired in July 2015.
In 2016 a carnival was held to purchase a paper sorter and window grills. The Titian Kasih program improved parent-teacher relations. Pn Diana Vijianthi Patricks retired in August 2016.
A mini carnival in 2017 raised funds for school development programs. Pn. Shabariah Mohd Sidik retired as principal. Pn Aziah binti Ahmad took over. Pn.Tan Ah Gan Pn.Nor Atiah and Pn.Sabariah binti Mustanuddin also retired. The Frog Room was created to enhance VLE FROG usage at SMK Seri Mutiara.
Today SMK Seri Mutiara continues to uphold its motto: “Berusaha Berilmu Berbakti” which means Strive for Knowledge Be of Service. The school’s commitment to academic excellence and character development ensures its students are well prepared for the future. With 1215 students and 83 teachers SMK Seri Mutiara remains a vital part of the Cheras community.
