Did the walls of Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Seri Kembangan whisper secrets of bygone eras? I bet they do. Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Seri Kembangan first opened its doors in 1965. Back then, it was known as SMJK (Inggeris) Serdang Bharu, a secondary school with English as the medium of instruction. Picture the scene: the year is 1966. Tun Abdul Razak, Malaysia’s Deputy Prime Minister at the time, lays the foundation stone. The air buzzes with anticipation. But there’s a catch. The school building isn’t ready yet. Students find a temporary home at Sekolah Rendah Jenis Kebangsaan (C) Serdang Baru. As more students enroll, they even share space at SRJK (C) Kwong Hon in Sungai Besi. Finally, in 1968, the wait is over. Three blocks and a canteen stand proudly on Jalan Sekolah. On November 18, 1968, Tun Abdul Razak officially inaugurates the school. Can you imagine the excitement? The name changes reflect the evolving times. From SMJK (Inggeris) Serdang Bharu to SMJK (Inggeris) Seri Kembangan, and later to Seri Kembangan Secondary School. As Bahasa Melayu becomes the main language of instruction, the name shifts to Sekolah Menengah Seri Kembangan, the name we know today. In 1969, the first batch of students takes the Lower Certificate of Education (LCE) examination. The results are impressive, with a 78% pass rate. For higher education, students initially attend other schools. Fast forward to 1973, the school hosts its first cross-country event. In 1977, the inaugural annual sports day takes place. By 1975, recognizing the local community’s needs, Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Seri Kembangan expands to offer Form Four classes. The following year, students sit for the MCE examination, achieving a 48.8% pass rate. The science stream begins in 1980. Growth necessitates expansion. Block D, with science labs, a resource room, and classrooms, appears in 1975. More classrooms, housed in a wooden block, are added in 1982. The school keeps growing, evolving, and nurturing generations of students. The SMK Wings marching band, a source of pride, performs at prestigious events like the 2017 SEA Games opening ceremony. Even today, Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Seri Kembangan continues to inspire and educate, a testament to its rich history.
