Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Cheras

Nestled amidst the bustling streets of Kuala Lumpur, Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Cheras whispers tales of bygone eras. This isn’t just any school. It’s a historical landmark, a cultural cornerstone, and the heart of the Cheras community. Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Cheras, affectionately known as SMKC, SMK Cheras, or even “Sekolah Kunci,” meaning “Key School,” first opened its doors in 1964. Imagine a time when this vibrant hub of learning was just a plot of land, a former mining area in between Kuala Lumpur and Kajang. The school’s early days were marked by challenges. The students initially attended classes in the afternoons at Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Jalan Cochrane while their own building was under construction. Finally, on March 27, 1969, the new Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Cheras building was officially opened by YB Encik Mohamed Khir Johari. The school began its journey with 519 students and 21 teachers. Now, fast forward to 2009. Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Cheras boasts a student population of 1662, comprised of 910 boys and 752 girls, guided by a dedicated team of 127 teachers. The school occupies a sprawling 14.6-acre campus. This allows it to serve the diverse community of Cheras. Over the years, Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Cheras has flourished under the leadership of eleven principals. Today, the school grounds are home to nine main blocks, three smaller buildings, a prayer room (surau), and two gymnasiums. Students have access to a variety of sports facilities. These include the playing field, tennis courts, basketball courts, volleyball courts, sepak takraw courts, netball courts, and two badminton courts. The school also adopted a new slogan: “Feeling Great Cherasian.” This embodies the spirit and pride of the school. Located on Jalan Yaacob Latif, in Bandar Tun Razak, Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Cheras is just five kilometers from the heart of Kuala Lumpur. Notable landmarks nearby include the Rumah Kanak-Kanak Tengku Budriah, Maktab Perguruan Ilmu Khas, and Sekolah Menengah Sains Alam Shah. And sports enthusiasts take note, the Velodrome Kuala Lumpur and a food court are practically next door. Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Cheras is more than just bricks and mortar.
