Remember that time in 1949? Sekolah Kebangsaan Convent Jalan Peel opened its doors. It wasn’t a grand affair. The school started as a branch of Sekolah Rendah Kebangsaan Convent Bukit Nanas. It was housed in a temporary hall. Imagine forty students per class in a temporary building. The first headmistress Sister St Catherine Hendricks guided those early years.
The school’s location presented unique challenges. The site was a former mine. Draining the water took a long time. For two years students studied under a temporary roof. A small hall was all they had. Yet they learned. They persevered.
In 1951 a new building finally emerged. Sixteen classrooms an office and a staff room. Sister St John Bosco was the headmistress then. The student population grew to a thousand. By 1957 the school split into two sessions. This accommodated the growing number of students. Some classes moved to other schools. A year later many students returned to Sekolah Kebangsaan Convent Jalan Peel. Others moved permanently.
Sister Alphonse Coombs led the school from 1963 to 1975. Ms Monica Chow served as acting headmistress until 1977. Mrs Evelyn John followed from 1977 to 1984. Sister Anne-Marie Lopez became headmistress in 1985. The school celebrated its silver jubilee in 1974. Former students and teachers gathered. It was a day of celebration and remembrance.
Despite modest academic achievements the school fostered a spirit of participation. Students competed at school district and national levels. This built their determination. The school’s location near students’ homes proved beneficial. Parent-teacher meetings and community engagement improved standards.
