Founded in 1928 Sekolah Jenis Kebangsaan Jalan Davidson stands proudly before us. Its history is rich and layered like a delicious kuih lapis. Initially known as the Government Chinese Free School it offered education to underprivileged children. It began in a humble building opposite the Kwong Siew Association on Jalan Bandar. Its first headmaster was Encik Chooi Siew Suan. Teaching methods were traditional.
In 1962 a proposal to expand the school gained traction. This came from Encik Chan Chuen Poh a Chinese school administrator. It was strongly supported by local lawmakers. The expansion led to a new building at the foot of Bukit Petaling on Jalan Davidson. This is where the school stands today.
The first headmaster of the new building was Encik Loke Chong San. He oversaw six teachers and approximately 200 students. Education was free. Textbooks were provided. The school was under the care of Chinese Affairs Officers. It was the first government Chinese school in the state.
The Japanese occupation sadly disrupted the school’s operations. The facilities were damaged. After the war with the help of several individuals from the Selangor Education Department the school was restored. Encik Ting Pin Sung became headmaster. English was added to the curriculum. Mandarin remained the primary language of instruction. The school’s student population grew to around 500.
In the late 1940s the Ministry of Education established Senior Normal Teacher Training. Sekolah Jenis Kebangsaan Jalan Davidson became a training center. Over five sessions it trained more than 150 teachers. It also served as a training center for Chinese primary school teachers on leave.
Educational policies shifted in 1958. The school came under the Municipality Education Office. A management board was formed. The name changed to SRJK(C) Jalan Davidson.
Throughout its history the school faced challenges and triumphs. It continuously adapted to the changing educational landscape. It expanded its facilities added new programs and consistently strived for excellence. The school’s unwavering dedication to its students has ensured its lasting legacy. Today Sekolah Jenis Kebangsaan Jalan Davidson remains a pillar of the Chinese community a testament to perseverance and the pursuit of knowledge. It continues to nurture young minds shaping the future.
