The idea for Sekolah Berasrama Penuh Integrasi came about in 2002. Tan Sri Musa Mohamad was the Minister of Education then. He envisioned a school that combined Islamic science, science, and technical studies. Before this, students interested in Islamic science had to attend religious schools.
Sekolah Berasrama Penuh Integrasi Gombak opened its doors in December 2002. The first students arrived on February 17, 2003. There were only 14 teachers for 162 students. These students were in Forms 1 and 4. By 2007, the school had grown. It now had 601 students and 65 teachers. This included 30 students from Thailand.
Sekolah Berasrama Penuh Integrasi Gombak has achieved much since its beginning. It was recognized as a high-performance school in 2011. By 2014, it had been nominated as a School of Global Excellence. This made it one of the youngest schools to receive this honor.
The school can accommodate up to 800 students. It provides hostels and classrooms for them. Students from Form 1 to Form 5 study here. Students with excellent results in Ujian Penilaian Sekolah Rendah and Pentaksiran Tingkatan Tiga are selected. They get the chance to study at Sekolah Berasrama Penuh Integrasi Gombak.
The school prepares students for important exams. These are Pentaksiran Tingkatan Tiga for Form 3 students. Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia is for Form 5 students. Sekolah Berasrama Penuh Integrasi Gombak has consistently ranked among the top schools in Malaysia. It has achieved excellent results in the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia examinations. In 2013, it was the best school in Selangor. In 2020, it became the best school in Malaysia. It repeated this achievement in 2022.

The school is led by a principal. Encik Zulkipli Bin Abd Latib is the current principal. He is appointed by the Ministry of Education Malaysia. He is assisted by senior assistants. They manage administration, student affairs, and co-curricular activities.
