Sekizan Zen Temple. A name that echoes with centuries of history and whispers of ancient legends. Right now, we are standing before its hallowed gates, a place deeply intertwined with the protection of Kyoto. Sekizan Zen Temple was founded in 888, a testament to a priest’s promise and a deity’s protection. Jikaku-Daishi (Ennin), a devoted student of Buddhism, had ventured to China long ago. There, he sought the wisdom of Tendai teachings and found himself at the mercy of treacherous seas on his journey back to Japan. Legend has it that Ennin prayed to Sekizan Daimyojin, a guardian deity. Sekizan Daimyojin, moved by his plight, ensured his safe return. In his later years, Ennin, nearing the end of his earthly journey, urged his disciples to build a temple honoring Sekizan Daimyojin. This act of reverence was more than just gratitude for a safe passage. It was strategically placed in the northeast of Kyoto, a direction believed vulnerable to malevolent spirits. Sekizan Zen Temple, with its protective monkey deity perched atop a pavilion roof, stands as a vigilant guardian against misfortune. Even the placement of the temple was significant. As you explore the temple grounds, you’ll notice the two large rings of Juzu prayer beads. Make a wish as you pass through the first ring and hold it in your heart until you reach the second. Tradition says that if the wish still resonates within you, praying to the deity might bring it to fruition. Sekizan Zen Temple is not just a place of tranquility – it’s a living testament to faith, legend, and the enduring power of human belief.
