Step inside Sekihoji Temple a hidden gem in Kyoto. Feel the centuries whispering from its weathered stones. This Obaku sect temple nestled in Fushimi Ward holds a fascinating history. Founded in 1713 by the sixth Shoan Sengai of Manpuku-ji Temple its origins stretch further back. Sekihoji’s principal image is Yakushi Nyorai the Buddha of Healing. A remarkable story surrounds this statue. Lost to a wartime fire it was miraculously rediscovered in 1596. It was then enshrined in a small shrine before finding its final home here at Sekihoji.
But Sekihoji’s allure extends beyond its venerable history. The temple’s grounds house a collection of stone statues. These aren’t ordinary statues. They are the Gohyaku Rakan the five hundred disciples of Buddha who attained Nirvana. These breathtaking sculptures were conceived by the renowned Edo period painter Ito Jakuchu. A remarkable detail is that Jakuchu although a painter did not sculpt them himself. He designed them and stonemasons brought his vision to life. The connection between Jakuchu and Sekihoji is profound. The artist spent his final years near the temple building the Gohyaku Rakan. He died at age 85 just outside its gates.
