Gazing up at Seits-Kapelle, one might wonder about the stories it could tell. Seits-Kapelle, also known as Seits-Kapellenhäuschen, sits peacefully on the Mosel Höhenweg. This path winds between the wine village of Klotten and the town of Cochem. The story of Seits-Kapelle began in the 19th century. In 1859, a small shrine dedicated to Mary was built. This was thanks to the generosity of Johann Schunk II and his wife Maria Elisabeth. Later, in 1881, the Herz-Jesu-Kapelle was added. Although these two structures are joined together, they remain distinct. Many original features of Seits-Kapelle have been preserved. The entrance area and the floor are from the time it was built. While the original wooden benches are gone, newer Passion paintings by F. W. Bäsken adorn the walls. The original 15th-century Vesperbild has been replaced with a more recent version. A wrought-iron grille separates the choir area. Within the choir, a statue of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, created by Carl Welter, stands prominently. Seits-Kapelle stands as a testament to the devotion and artistry of those who created it. It’s a quiet place for reflection, overlooking the vineyards and the valley below.
