Tremors. That’s what the University of Queensland Seismology Station has been detecting for nearly a century. Right here in Brisbane.
The Seismic Station isn’t just a collection of instruments. It’s a testament to human curiosity and scientific persistence. Established in 1938 its origins lie in the devastating Gayndah earthquake of 1935. That quake sparked a desire to understand the earth’s rumbles. It led to the donation of a Milne-Shaw seismograph a crucial piece of equipment.
W H Bryan a geology lecturer played a pivotal role. He investigated the Gayndah earthquake distributing questionnaires and conducting fieldwork. His efforts highlighted the need for a permanent station. The University’s Geology department under Professor H C Richards embraced the challenge. They used public interest to promote earthquake research.
Initially housed in a George Street building the station moved to the Richards Building in St Lucia after the University relocated in 1951. However construction interfered with readings. So the seismographs were moved to Mt Nebo in 1956 and Charters Towers in 1960.
But the University’s commitment didn’t end there. The Seismic Station’s data continued to be shared nationally and internationally. The Queensland government’s Department of Mines and Energy even collaborated for a time. Today the Earth Systems Science Computational Centre at UQ continues the analysis. Organizations like the United States Geological Survey and the International Seismological Centre in the UK still rely on the data collected here in Brisbane.
The Seismic Station’s legacy extends beyond scientific data. It represents a continuous effort to learn about our planet’s dynamic forces. It demonstrates the importance of long term research projects. It also shows the power of collaboration and the international sharing of knowledge.
