Hidden within Staten Island’s embrace lies Seidenburg Park. It’s a haven of 23 acres, a testament to nature’s resilience. Seidenburg Park was once known as Evergreen Park. It was born in 1982 from a land exchange between the city and the Arthur Walkill Corporation. This deal involved not just land, but also a $75,000 trust fund for the park’s upkeep. Seidenburg Park honors a local hero, firefighter Christopher John Siedenburg. He tragically lost his life battling a SoHo fire in 1994 at the young age of 25. His dedication to service, from his high school days to his time with the FDNY, resonated deeply within the community. Even amidst the searing pain of his fatal injuries, Siedenburg affirmed his love for his profession, declaring it “the greatest job in the world, helping people.” This park, renamed in his memory in 2001, stands as a tribute to his courage and selfless spirit. Within Seidenburg Park’s boundaries thrives a diverse ecosystem. A swamp teeming with life greets visitors at the Greaves Avenue entrance. Great blue herons, mallard ducks, egrets, green herons, and red-winged blackbirds call this swamp home. They feast on the fish and plants that flourish in the wetlands. The park is also home to a vast oak forest. Here, various ferns, pink-ladies-slipper orchids, wild blueberries, and azaleas paint the landscape with vibrant hues. Unique species like royal ferns, netted chain ferns, and Indian cucumber roots add to the park’s botanical richness. The Staten Island Institute of Arts and Sciences played a role in the park’s early years. They managed the property until 1989, providing educational programs and security. Since then, the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation has overseen its maintenance, ensuring its preservation for future generations. Seidenburg Park offers more than just natural beauty. It offers a space for reflection and remembrance, a place where the echoes of a fallen hero’s bravery intertwine with the whispers of the wind through the trees.
