“Be watchful”. That is what the words on the Sei wachsam Sculpture mean. This sculpture stands as a poignant reminder here at Allermöher See.
The Sei wachsam Sculpture is more than just a stone. It is a memorial created by German artist Mariella Mosler in 2014. Mariella Mosler was born in 1962. The sculpture is a memorial stone made of Wunsiedler marble. It stands about 150 cm tall and weighs 1.5 tons.
Why was the Sei wachsam Sculpture created? It marks a tragic event. In May 2012, a young girl drowned in Allermöher See. Another was seriously injured. Local residents asked KOKUS e.V. to create a memorial. KOKUS stands for Kommunikations- und Kunstverein Allermöhe. This is an association of developers in Neuallermöhe-West.
Look closely at the Sei wachsam Sculpture. You will see the inscription “Sei wachsam”. This is German for “Be watchful”. The message is also written in other languages. These include Turkish, Farsi, Russian, and Polish. Each language serves as a reminder to be vigilant.
On the back of the Sei wachsam Sculpture, there is a dedication. It honors those who drowned in Allermöher See. The location is deliberate. It is near the bathing area and the water rescue station.
Between 2003 and 2014, KOKUS e.V. organized competitions for 25 artworks. Seventeen of these are still in public spaces. By 2021, eight had been removed. The last remaining funds were used for this memorial stone.
The Sei wachsam Sculpture serves as a reminder. It urges us to be careful and remember those lost. The Elbe River enriches Hamburg’s history. The sculpture enriches Allermöher See. It is a place for reflection and caution. It is a space where art meets remembrance. The setting is tranquil. The message is powerful. Let the words “Sei wachsam” stay with you.
