Nestled within the bustling heart of Prenzlauer Berg stands the Segenskirche. Its history is quite a tale. The year is 1908. Berlin is booming. The vibrant neighborhood around Schönhauser Allee is overflowing, its residents clamoring for a new place of worship. The Segenskirche was built in response, a beacon of faith amidst the urban sprawl. The architects, Georg Dinklage and Ernst Paulus, designed a grand complex, complete with a towering 75-meter high bell tower. The tower itself is an architectural marvel. Can you imagine climbing the seemingly endless spiral staircase within? It leads to breathtaking views of the city. Sadly, these views are not accessible to the public. But even from the street below, the Segenskirche offers a feast for the eyes. Notice the intricate details of its facade. Admire the four-story parish hall, its gate passage a welcoming archway to the interior courtyard and the church beyond. Every corner of this complex, from the church hall to the facades, the stairwells to the very tower itself, is protected under historical preservation. This status ensures the continued maintenance and appropriate use of the building, safeguarding its legacy for generations to come. Originally a Protestant church, the Segenskirche today serves as the Stadtkloster Segen. It has been home to the Communität Don Camillo since 2007. Now a vibrant center for a broad range of events and services, the Segenskirche continues to serve its community. The guest rooms, meeting spaces, church, and garden welcome visitors from near and far. The apartments house the members of the convent, creating a unique urban monastery. The transformation from church to Stadtkloster Segen also marked a period of extensive renovations. From 2007 to 2019, the complex was carefully restored, culminating in the meticulous preservation of the tower in the final phase. If you visit the Stadtkloster Segen today, you will be welcomed at a bright yellow construction trailer. Since 2022, it has served as the monastery gate, greeting all who come to experience the rich history and vibrant present of the Segenskirche.
