Behold Segelmotiv I. This bronze sculpture stands proudly near the Rolandsbrücke. It’s one of the last great works by Rudolf Belling.

Created in 1962 it was originally placed in front of the Bank der Gemeinwirtschaft. Belling a pioneer of abstract sculpture in Germany. He aimed for dynamism not representation. His earlier work Dreiklang a rhythmic dance-like form paved the way.

Segelmotiv I unlike representational art derives power from its form’s movement. Think of sails billowing in the wind. Its shape appears to shift depending on your viewpoint. This dynamic effect is the sculpture’s unique feature.

Belling born in Berlin in 1886 trained as a modeler. He even designed stage decorations for Max Reinhardt. His early work had a cubist-expressionist style. He traveled extensively. He was part of the Arbeitsrat für Kunst and the Novembergruppe.

The Nazis labeled him a degenerate artist. They seized and destroyed many of his works. Despite this he received numerous awards including the prestigious Great Cross of the Order of Merit. He eventually emigrated to Turkey. He taught there until he was eighty years old.

This Segelmotiv I is more than just a sculpture. It’s a testament to Belling’s resilience. It’s a celebration of abstract art. It showcases the power of form and movement. It also embodies the enduring spirit of a remarkable artist. Take a moment to appreciate the interplay of light and shadow on its surface. Let the bronze’s cool smoothness engage your senses. Feel the energy that radiates from this piece of Hamburg’s artistic heritage. This dynamic Segelmotiv I truly captures the essence of movement frozen in time.
