Segelflugplatz Fischbek isn’t just a glider airfield. It’s a living piece of aviation history. The very ground you stand on witnessed the first flight attempts by Gottlieb Rost back in 1910 a true pioneer of flight. Since 1925 this place has been a hub for gliding enthusiasts.
Look around you. Three runways stretch before us two grass and one made of gravel. The southern runway is special. At 900 meters it’s used for winch launches a thrilling way to take to the skies. The parallel runways are unusually narrow only 4-5 meters wide. This is to protect the surrounding Fischbeker Heide nature reserve. These protected areas are vital for preserving the natural beauty of the area. It’s a unique feature of Segelflugplatz Fischbek.
The Segelflug-Club Fischbek e V has been managing Segelflugplatz Fischbek since 1964. This club is the result of a merger of several earlier clubs. They continue the proud tradition of flight at this special location.
Notice the unique landscape. The sandy rolling hills of the Heide create excellent thermal conditions for gliding. Especially beautiful is the evening thermals. The large surrounding pine forests release their stored energy creating smooth ascents. From above you have a breathtaking panoramic view of Hamburg bathed in the evening sun. This makes Segelflugplatz Fischbek a truly special place for gliding enthusiasts.
However gliding here isn’t for just anyone. Motor gliders or ultralights need special permission. Five introductory flights with a local instructor are required before you can fly here. There’s also a 20-meter maximum wingspan limit. So please contact the club in advance before any visit.
