A monument stands tall. It marks a pivotal moment in Seelze’s history. This is the Obentrautdenkmal a sandstone pyramid. It commemorates General Michael von Obentraut. He was fatally wounded near Seelze in 1625 during the Thirty Years’ War. The battle itself held little strategic importance. Yet it left Seelze with this lasting reminder. The monument stands as a testament to a dramatic event. A seemingly small clash in a larger conflict.

Seelze itself wasn’t always a city. It only received city status in 1977. This was thanks to Lower Saxony’s administrative and territorial reforms. Eleven villages were merged forming a large municipality. Before this Seelze was just one of many small farming communities. Its history is less one of great heroes and more of quiet perseverance. The lives of farmers and artisans shaped its early character. One notable exception is a local clergyman. In the 13th century he became Bishop of Osnabrück. This was a significant achievement for a person from the noble Velber family. King George V of Hanover even visited the Kirchwehren shooting festival in 1864. A round stone table and a commemorative plaque near the Königseiche oak tree still mark this occasion.

The area’s transformation began in 1847. The railway line from Hanover to Minden opened that year. It ran along the Leine river south of Letter. It passed Seelze Lohnde and Gümmer. Seelze received its first train station. This was a significant turning point. It connected Seelze to a wider network. It attracted artisans particularly shoemakers and tailors. They could now reach a wider clientele.

By the early 20th century industry began to arrive. The chemical factory of Eugen de Haen opened around 1900. It created hundreds of jobs sparking a building boom. Continental Gummiwerke opened a branch in 1902. Unfortunately it closed in 1931 during the Great Depression. A major development was the Seelze marshalling yard opened in 1909. This was one of the largest in Germany. The Mittelland Canal was completed in 1916 further transforming Seelze. It continues to shape Seelze’s landscape along with the canal branch to Linden harbor. Today this is a popular route for leisure boaters.

The original village of Seelze has grown considerably. It is now the true center of the city. Seelze-Süd a large new residential area south of the city center is still developing. It began in 2001. Even the southern villages of Seelze maintain much of their rural character. They still show signs of their origins as farming communities.

The Obentrautdenkmal therefore stands as a symbolic representation of Seelze’s enduring story. It’s a story of transformation from a small farming community. It transformed into a bustling city impacted by railway industry and a canal. It’s a story of contrasts and resilience. Seelze has embraced change while preserving its unique identity.
