Built in 1929 the Seeley G Mudd Building stands proudly on the USC campus. Its construction cost a hefty $300000. This impressive sum reflects the generosity of Seeley Wintersmith Mudd. He was a renowned mining engineer and philanthropist. His son Seeley Greenleaf Mudd a Dean at the USC School of Medicine also left his mark on the university. The Seeley G Mudd Building bears his name.

Architect Ralph Carlin Flewelling designed the Seeley G Mudd Building. His father Dr Ralph Tyler Flewelling became the building’s first director. The building’s unique style blends pre-Renaissance Tuscan with Romanesque Byzantine and Middle Eastern elements. Intricate stone carvings adorn the exterior. A tall clock tower soars 146 feet into the sky. A central fountain provides a tranquil spot for reflection. Look closely and you’ll discover hidden details. For instance a stone figure holding a lamp over the south entrance represents Diogenes the Greek philosopher searching for an honest man.

Initially the Seeley G Mudd Building housed classrooms. There was a space for the Philosophy Club known as the Argonauts’ Hall. A large lecture hall named Borden Parker Bowne Hall also resided within. Faculty offices occupied some areas. Interestingly the building also boasted a rare book room and a book bindery. Today these areas have been transformed into additional classrooms and offices.

The James Harmon Hoose Library of Philosophy is a highlight of the Seeley G Mudd Building. It resembles a scene from Harry Potter. It’s USC’s oldest library named after the school’s first philosophy professor James Harmon Hoose. The library’s collection started small. It was housed in the Old College building before finding its home in the Seeley G Mudd Building. Dr Ralph Tyler Flewelling played a key role in expanding the library’s collection. He aimed to acquire rare books and incunables books printed before 1500. Wallace Nethery continued this legacy. He documented Dr Flewelling’s contributions and the library’s growth in his book.

The Seeley G Mudd Building has undergone restoration. Extensive work was carried out in 2003. This earned it a Los Angeles Conservancy Preservation Award in 2004. Since 2013 the building holds the designation of a City of Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument. The building’s enduring beauty serves as a testament to its rich history. It’s a place where past and present converge. Its story continues to unfold.
