Sunlight streams through the large windows of the Sedgwick Library. It illuminates the innovative circular community room. Have you ever seen a community room quite like this? Cased in stainless steel, it’s a striking feature of this modern building. The Sedgwick Library stands proudly on University Avenue, at the corner of West 176th Street in the Bronx. Opened to the public in 1951, the Sedgwick Library originally served the residents of the Sedgwick Houses, a large housing project. The library was initially located on the ground floor of the project. It later found its current home in June 1994. The relocation and renovation brought some major improvements. A second floor was added, complete with an elevator and 19 computer workstations, making the Sedgwick Library a truly modern resource for the community. Today, the Sedgwick Library offers a welcoming space for everyone. The first floor houses a dedicated children’s collection, fostering a love of reading from a young age. Upstairs, adults and young adults can explore a wide range of books and resources. The unique circular community room isn’t just for looks. It hosts both library programs and community group meetings, strengthening the bond between the Sedgwick Library and the people it serves. And if you’re looking for some afternoon sun, the large windows offer a perfect spot to bask in the natural light while you dive into a good book.
