“Sector 4, București,” the sign reads. Did you know this administrative unit holds a wealth of stories? Sector 4 is one of Bucharest’s six sectors. It is responsible for local affairs. These affairs include secondary streets and parks. Schools and cleaning services also fall under its jurisdiction.

Sector 4’s story begins long before its modern form. Initially, Bucharest was divided into plăși. Later, these became known as culori or colors. These colors were Roșu, Galben, Negru, Albastru, and Verde.

In 1950, the Communist regime changed things again. The culori were replaced by eight raions. But in 1968, these raions transformed into sectors. Finally, in 1979, Sector 8 merged into Sector 1. Sector 2 joined Sector 3. This yielded the six sectors we know today including Sector 4.

Today, Sector 4 covers 34 square kilometers. As of 2021, 262,780 people called it home. That’s a population density of 7,728.8 per square kilometer. Daniel Băluță from the Social Democratic Party is the current mayor. He was elected in 2016 and re-elected in 2020.

Within Sector 4, you’ll find diverse neighborhoods. Berceni, Olteniței, and Văcărești are all here. So are Timpuri Noi, Tineretului, and Progresul.

Sector 4 boasts green spaces and recreational areas. Carol Park provides a relaxing escape. Tineretului Park offers boating and concerts. The Văcărești Nature Park is another notable location.

Romavia once had its head office in Sector 4. Sector 4 is easily explored via the metro at University Station. Nearby, Vitan is home to the Bucharest Mall. In Sector 5, you can find the Casino at JW Marriott Bucharest Grand Hotel.

Sector 4 is more than just an administrative division. It’s a vibrant part of Bucharest. It has a rich history and diverse communities. It blends green spaces with urban life. Take a moment to appreciate Sector 4’s unique character.
