What if I told you there’s a place where the city’s secrets whisper on the wind? A place called the Secret Swing in Elysian Park. This isn’t just any swing. It’s a throne overlooking a kingdom of concrete and dreams, the sprawl of Los Angeles. The Secret Swing, once a solitary sentinel atop a hill, offered a breathtaking panorama of the city, the 5 Freeway snaking below like a metallic river, and the distant mountains standing guard. It was a place where you could kick out towards the Los Angeles River, Montecito Heights, and beyond, feeling the city breathe beneath you. The Secret Swing wasn’t always so easy to find. Brave souls once climbed a steep, almost hidden trail, their reward the exhilarating view and the simple joy of swinging above it all. Its very existence felt like a shared secret, a hidden gem in a city overflowing with them. The Secret Swing has a curious history. It disappeared a few times, only to reappear, as if by magic. It echoed the spirit of another famous swing, La Casa del Arbol in Baños, Ecuador, a swing at the edge of the world. Sadly, as of the summer of 2020, the Secret Swing seems to have vanished again. Perhaps it’s on a long vacation, waiting for the right moment to return. Even without the swing, the location itself is worth the visit. The view remains, offering a stunning vista of the Los Angeles skyline, especially in the morning. You can still find the spot, marked on maps as “Secret Swing Angels Point,” though technically it’s not quite at Angels Point. There’s usually parking available along Angels Point Road, and a steep climb up the trail, past graffiti-covered rocks, leads you to the spot where the Secret Swing once held court. Stand there, close your eyes, and imagine the wind in your hair, the city at your feet, the thrill of the swing. The secret, even without the swing, still whispers. The Secret Swing in Elysian Park, a reminder that magic can exist, even in a city of millions.
