Pastor Joel W Tyler leads Second Rose of Sharon Missionary Baptist Church. It’s a vibrant community in New Orleans. This church stands at 1739 Gordon Street. The Second Rose of Sharon Missionary Baptist Church has deep roots. Its history stretches back much further than its current building.
The original Rose of Sharon Baptist Church began in 1908. Sixty-five people met in Butler Hall. They chose Reverend James Wesley White as their pastor. The church grew quickly. It soon outgrew its space. A new building was constructed on 10th and St James Streets. Sadly a fire destroyed this building in 1911. Undeterred they built again.
Under Reverend J W White’s leadership the church flourished. It reached approximately 400 members. Many auxiliaries supported the church’s programs. These included choirs women’s groups and youth organizations. Reverend White’s son Reverend Willie Augustus White became pastor in 1947. He oversaw major renovations and further expansion. The church’s influence extended to the Eighth District Missionary Baptist Association and beyond.
In 1959 a new church building was constructed. It cost $175000. The mortgage was paid off in 1966. The current structure stands as a testament to the faith and dedication of generations. The church continued to grow and adapt. It welcomed new pastors and new ministries. It always remained a central part of the New Orleans community.
Reverend Larry Douglas Smith served as pastor for twenty years. He added many programs including a senior day camp and a computer lab. He also oversaw further growth and improvements. After Reverend Smith’s retirement Reverend Rodney H Lonix Sr and then Reverend Carl Owens served as pastors. Each leader built upon the legacy of faith and service.
Second Rose of Sharon Missionary Baptist Church continues its mission. It provides spiritual guidance fellowship and community support. The church’s history reflects the enduring spirit of its members. Their faith has guided them through challenges. Their commitment has built a strong and vibrant community.
