The story of Zion Baptist Church has earlier roots too. Rev. Moore was called to the pastorate in 1897. He came from Denver, Colorado. He encouraged the youth. He wanted them to pursue positive goals through education. Under his leadership, the church secured a Charter. They installed a new organ. They acquired properties between Wallace and Mellon streets.

In 1955, Zion moved to Broad and Venango Streets. They purchased St. Paul’s Reformed Episcopal Church for $225,000. In 1969, Zion purchased the Trinity Reformed Church of Philadelphia. It became an Urban Christian Training Center.

Tragedy struck in 1970. Zion was destroyed by fire. Rev. Sullivan promised Zion would rise like a Phoenix. In 1973, the new cornerstone was laid.
