The Second Mount Triumph Missionary Baptist Church, a beacon of history and faith, stands proudly on Washington Avenue in New Orleans. This historic sanctuary, founded in 1869, has witnessed the city’s transformation through the decades. It was originally called The First Baptist Church, but after a division, it became Second Baptist Church. A storm destroyed the first building, but resilience was a hallmark of the congregation, and they quickly rebuilt. The Second Mount Triumph Missionary Baptist Church, as it’s known today, boasts a rich history, marked by a series of dedicated pastors who shaped its character. From the first pastor, Reverend Moses Jackson, to the visionary leadership of Reverend Warren Joseph Ray Jr., who oversaw the construction of the current church, the Second Mount Triumph Missionary Baptist Church has been a cornerstone of the Carrollton community. The building is striking, with its tall steeple reaching for the sky. An interesting tidbit: in the early 1970’s, they dedicated their new sanctuary. It was 1998 before they were able to finally pay off the mortgage on that lovely building, but it was a debt-free church by the turn of the century. The Second Mount Triumph Missionary Baptist Church is in fact one of the oldest churches in the area, having weathered storms not only physical but also in the changes of the city, and persevering through them all. You can feel the enduring spirit of faith here, a testament to the power of community and the enduring legacy of this important place of worship.
