In the heart of Houston, Texas, stands the magnificent Second Baptist Church. Second Baptist Church is more than just a place of worship. A group of 121 devout individuals gathered at the old Taylor School in downtown Houston, driven by a shared vision to create a new congregation. Their determination led them to acquire their first permanent home a year later. They purchased the former St. Paul’s Methodist Church on Milam and McGowen streets. The church’s westward expansion in 1957 marked a turning point in its history. Seeking to embrace the burgeoning families in western Houston, they moved to their current location on Woodway Drive and Voss Road. This move reflected their commitment to reaching out and serving the evolving needs of the community. Today, this site is known as the Woodway Campus. One of the most awe-inspiring features of the Woodway Campus is its extraordinary pipe organ. It’s the largest all-pipe Rodgers organ ever constructed, boasting an astounding 192 stops and 10,412 pipes. This magnificent instrument is a testament to Second Baptist Church’s dedication to musical excellence and creating an immersive worship experience. However, the organ’s journey hasn’t been without its challenges. In 2008, Hurricane Ike swept through Houston, causing significant damage to the church’s 5,500-seat Worship Center, including the organ. Yet, like a beacon of resilience, the church meticulously restored the damaged elements, ensuring that the organ’s soul-stirring music continued to resonate within its walls. But Second Baptist Church’s impact extends far beyond its impressive architecture and musical grandeur. By 1979, they were broadcasting their services on local television, followed by local radio in 1982. The church’s message of faith and hope reached a national audience with the launch of “The Winning Walk.” Today, their message transcends geographical boundaries through international television, radio, and the internet. Second Baptist Church’s commitment to community is evident in its numerous campuses throughout Houston. From its humble beginnings as a single entity, it has blossomed into a multi-site church.
