Can a place hold the echoes of six cities? Here at Sechsstädteplatz, it truly feels like it can. Sechsstädteplatz, meaning “Six Cities Square,” isn’t just a park. It’s a living testament to a powerful alliance. This square honors the Oberlausitzer Sechsstädtebund, a league of six powerful cities that shaped this region’s destiny for centuries. Görlitz stood proudly alongside Bautzen, Kamenz, Löbau, Lauban (now Lubań), and Zittau from 1346 to 1815. Imagine the combined might, the shared resources, the vibrant exchange of ideas that flowed between these cities. Sechsstädteplatz captures that spirit. The square emerged around 1900, part of Görlitz’s southward expansion beyond the train station. The Gründerzeit architecture surrounding us stands as a proud reminder of that era of growth and prosperity. Notice how the tram tracks cut diagonally across Sechsstädteplatz, dividing it into two distinct triangles. This wasn’t the original plan. The tram initially skirted the square, only moving to its current position in 1939. In the late 1920s, a local newspaper published a whimsical article proposing a grand city hall for Sechsstädteplatz. The accompanying drawing depicted an imposing structure with archways spanning Biesnitzer Straße, a vision never intended to be realized, but a fun glimpse into the city’s aspirations. The modern Sechsstädteplatz we see today took shape in 2007. The renovation included a playground featuring four climbing towers and a unique hexagonal swing. New benches offer rest along the central area and the diagonal pedestrian path. The entire project cost €250,000, with 75% of the funding coming from a European development program. Today, Tram line 2 traverses the square, connecting Biesnitz and Königshufen. Shops, a pharmacy, and a branch of the Görlitz Women’s League occupy buildings along the north and east sides. The Women’s League hosts an annual family festival right here, bringing the square to life with laughter and community spirit. Sechsstädteplatz, a quiet park, a bustling transit hub, and a testament to a shared history. It’s a space where the past and present meet, offering us a unique glimpse into the heart of Görlitz.
