Ever pondered what secrets lie within that iconic, shell-like structure before you? This is the SEC Armadillo. Originally named the Clyde Auditorium, the SEC Armadillo has been a Glasgow landmark since 1997. Its unique design sparks curiosity and has become synonymous with the city’s skyline.

The SEC Armadillo is part of the Scottish Event Campus, or SEC. The SEC also includes the SEC Centre and the OVO Hydro. The idea for the SEC Armadillo arose in 1994. Planners wanted to expand the capacity of the SECC complex. Construction began in September 1995. It was completed in August 1997. During construction, its distinctive shape earned it the affectionate nickname “The Armadillo”.

Many compare its shape to the Sydney Opera House. However, the architects drew inspiration from the Clyde’s shipbuilding heritage. The design represents interlocking ship hulls. Standing at 40 meters tall, the SEC Armadillo is hard to miss. Passageways connect it to the SEC Centre and the Crowne Plaza hotel. This allows easy access for performers and attendees.

Inside the SEC Armadillo, a world of entertainment and events unfolds. The venue has a seating capacity of 3,000. Its floor area spans 2,285 square meters. The stage measures 18 meters wide by 12 meters deep. The screen is 17.3 meters by 4.5 meters. The SEC Armadillo is equipped with advanced technology. It boasts specialist AV, lighting, and sound capabilities. These features make it suitable for diverse productions.

The SEC Armadillo has hosted various events. Scottish auditions for Britain’s Got Talent and The X Factor took place here. Susan Boyle was discovered at the SEC Armadillo. The venue also held the Hugo Award ceremony. During the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, the SEC Armadillo hosted weightlifting competitions. At Christmas, pantomimes bring festive cheer to its stage.

Over the years, numerous famous performers have graced the SEC Armadillo. Dolly Parton, Tom Jones, and Blondie are among them. The SEC Armadillo has also hosted the Scottish BAFTAS. In 2003, it was the backdrop for anti-war protests.

On September 4, 1997, a girl named Katy Eynon ‘first footed’ the building with her toy armadillo. Later that month, around 10,000 people visited during Doors Open Day. The SEC Armadillo continues to be a vibrant hub for arts, culture, and entertainment. Its adaptable space can be easily customized for impactful presentations. The SEC Armadillo stands as a testament to Glasgow’s innovation and cultural vibrancy.
