Peeking out from the landscape, Searchlight No. 19 stands as a relic. It whispers tales of a time when the skies above San Diego held a very different kind of tension. This is not just a place. It is a portal to the past.

Searchlight Shelter No. 19 is historically important. It dates back to the Second World War from 1939 to 1945. It formed a part of the coastal defenses. These defenses were built on the coast.

Now imagine this area during World War II. The park around Searchlight No. 19 was temporarily off limits to the public. The area was a hub of military activity. Soldiers were even quartered in parts of the park. They even stayed at the Old Point Loma Lighthouse.

Fort Rosecrans had searchlights. It had bunkers and large gun emplacements. These additions transformed the area. They were meant to defend against potential threats.

The second picture taken in 1920 shows an older Point Loma searchlight in action. It was operated by the Army Corps of Engineers. Searchlight No. 19 stands as a reminder of this crucial time. It helps us remember the vigilance and sacrifice that defined an era.

The strategic value of Point Loma was clear. Shortly after the United States took California in 1848 the government made the whole area a military reserve. This is where coastal defenses would be built. The first setup was at Ballast Point. Both the Spanish and Mexican governments had a coastal fort there before.

Fort Rosecrans grew slowly over time. There were few defensive buildings until the 20th century. By World War I several hundred service members were at Fort Rosecrans. Its big gun batteries faced the coast. They were meant to protect it.

World War I led to Fort Rosecrans getting bigger. Many new buildings and facilities were added. But by 1940 the number of soldiers had dropped to only 287.

In 1947 the US Army said Fort Rosecrans was surplus. Ten years later it was handed over to the United States Navy. The Navy had been working in the area already. The Nav Electronic Laboratory started in 1945. The Submarine Group, San Diego was formed in 1946.

Visitors pass through part of the Naval Base and the National Cemetery. Even inside the park, you are in the former Fort Rosecrans. The park was created from the fort’s old land.

Today Searchlight No. 19 is a protected historic site. It reminds us of the important role San Diego played during World War II.
