Silent stones speak volumes here at the Sean Collier Memorial. This striking structure honors MIT Police Officer Sean Collier. He tragically lost his life in the aftermath of the Boston Marathon bombing in April 2013.

The Sean Collier Memorial stands at 32 Vassar Street. It marks the spot where Officer Collier was killed. The MIT community, students, faculty, and police officers, collaborated to create this lasting tribute. A public call for ideas shaped its design. It was dedicated on April 29, 2015.

J. Meejin Yoon, head of MIT’s Department of Architecture, led the design team. Structural engineering came from MacArthur Prize professor John Ochsendorf and his students. Rob Rogers, project manager and Officer Collier’s stepbrother, coordinated the construction.

Look closely. The memorial features 32 massive granite blocks. They are precisely shaped and fitted together. The shallow, open domed arch has five radial support wings. These wings are splayed out like fingers. This design reflects MIT’s motto: Mens et Manus meaning Mind and Hand. It also embodies Collier’s helpful spirit.

The granite material honors Collier’s love for hiking. He enjoyed exploring the White Mountains with the MIT Outing Club. Notice how the heavy stone blocks support each other. They symbolize strength through unity. The ovoid cavity represents a passage. It marks the site and reframes it. The void signifies the absence of Officer Collier.

Engineers used computer simulations. They studied the structure’s resistance to earthquakes. Each joint is perpendicular to the forces. This visually expresses the invisible forces holding it together. The underground foundation uses reinforced concrete. It resists the spreading forces from the arch. Mini-piles support the structure’s weight. They extend 30 to 40 feet deep.

Robotic saws carved the tapered stone blocks with precision. The blocks were installed under careful guidance. The central keystone weighs 12000 pounds. It was lowered slowly.

See the opening in the structure. It frames a view of where Collier sat in his police car. Raised stainless steel buttons are installed in the pavement. They encode Collier’s badge number “179” in Braille. This deters skateboarders. Smaller granite blocks provide seating. Honey locust trees offer a living canopy.

At night, in-ground LEDs illuminate the Sean Collier Memorial. The lights mirror the stars on the night of April 18, 2013. The Sean Collier Memorial transforms the heart of MIT into a place for reflection. It symbolizes strength through unity. It serves as a poignant reminder of a fallen hero. The memorial is a testament to community, remembrance, and enduring strength.
