How old is the Seafield Sri Maha Mariamman Temple really? That’s a question that has fueled much debate. Some say it was built in 1891. Others claim it dates back to 1974. The exact age remains disputed. We stand here today before the Seafield Sri Maha Mariamman Temple in USJ Selangor a significant Hindu temple in a predominantly middle-class suburb.

This temple isn’t just a place of worship. It’s a place steeped in history. It’s a testament to the enduring faith of the Indian community in Malaysia. Its story is intertwined with the development of the surrounding area. The land on which it stands was once owned by Sime Darby. Later it was purchased by MCT Bhd the developers of One City.

The temple’s existence wasn’t always guaranteed. One City’s plans for development led to a major land dispute. The developers sought a court order to relocate the temple. This sparked significant controversy and led to intense political involvement. The courts ultimately decided in favor of the developer. Yet attempts to take possession of the land proved unsuccessful leading to the tragic events of November 2018.

Riots broke out near the temple. These were fueled by the relocation issue. Public and private property were destroyed. Sadly a firefighter Muhammad Adib Mohd Kassim lost his life. The incident garnered national and international attention. The riots highlight the strong emotions associated with the temple and its place within the community.

The first riot began in the early hours of November 26. Provocateurs entered the temple. They threatened those inside. Police arrived later arresting several suspects. The ensuing violence resulted in numerous vehicles being set ablaze. The second riot led to the critical injury of firefighter Adib.

Despite initial reports of recovery Adib succumbed to his injuries. His death added another tragic layer to the temple’s already complicated history. The aftermath saw investigations and protests. It also led to a debate about police response and political accountability. The Seafield Sri Maha Mariamman Temple is more than just bricks and mortar. It’s a symbol of faith resilience and the enduring struggles of a community. It is a place where history and faith intertwine leaving a lasting impression on all who visit.
