Clean water is essential. But have you ever stopped to consider its journey to your tap? I am standing right here in front of the Seac Pai Van Water Treatment Plant. It is a pivotal point in Macau’s water supply system.

The Seac Pai Van Water Treatment Plant began operations at the end of 2021. It is a modern facility designed to ensure a stable and safe water supply for Macau. The plant mainly supplies water to the islands area. This includes the University of Macau campus in Hengqin, Coloane, Cotai, and some areas in Taipa. Its daily capacity is 130,000 cubic meters.

Before this plant existed, Macau’s water supply relied on a unidirectional flow from north to south. The Seac Pai Van Water Treatment Plant changed that. It created a dual-core water supply layout for the peninsula and the islands areas. This layout effectively enhances the capacity of the water supply system. It is particularly useful in emergencies.

The construction of the Seac Pai Van Water Treatment Plant started in mid-2018. It represents a significant investment of around one billion patacas. The plant covers an area of 17,000 square meters. This demonstrates Macau’s commitment to securing its water future.

Macau Water is a public concession company owned by SUEZ Asia. They operate three other water treatment plants. These are located in Ilha Verde, the Main Storage Reservoir, and Coloane Hill. The Seac Pai Van plant increased Macau’s daily water production capacity. It went from 390,000 cubic meters to 520,000 cubic meters.

The Seac Pai Van Water Treatment Plant uses advanced technology. The Pulsazur process is a highlight. It is a water treatment process adopted for the first time in Macau. It effectively removes residual odor, organic matter, and micro-pollutants from the water. This ensures the water is of the highest quality.

This plant also adheres to green principles. The Seac Pai Van Water Treatment Plant won the “One-Star Certificate of Green Building Design Label”. It embodies a concept of circular economy and energy conservation. Conservation of land, energy, water, materials and environmental protection were the design principles.

The plant complements the 4th Raw Water Pipeline to Macau. Together, they form a complete public water supply system. This covers raw water, water production, and water transmission. It significantly relieves the pressure on the Macau peninsula’s water treatment plants.

The Seac Pai Van Water Treatment Plant stands as a testament to Macau’s dedication to providing clean and reliable water. It uses advanced technology and sustainable practices. This ensures the city’s water security for years to come. As you turn on your tap today, remember the journey of that water. It travels from Zhuhai to the Seac Pai Van Water Treatment Plant. From there it goes to your home.
