The Seabrook Railroad Bridge is a bascule bridge that shares a name with the nearby Seabrook Bridge, a vehicular bridge officially known as the Senator Ted Hickey Bridge. To avoid confusion, we’ll stick with calling this one the Seabrook Railroad Bridge for our purposes. While it may seem unassuming now, the Seabrook Railroad Bridge played a vital role in the city’s growth. Built in 1923, the Seabrook Railroad Bridge, along with its counterparts such as the St. Claude Avenue Bridge and Almonaster Avenue Bridge, were essential to connecting rail lines across the Industrial Canal. This waterway, known locally as the Industrial Canal, is a crucial channel linking Lake Pontchartrain to the Mississippi River. The Seabrook Railroad Bridge wasn’t always solely for trains. Before the rise of the larger Seabrook Bridge in 1967, it carried both rail and vehicle traffic. Today, its primary function is to facilitate the smooth passage of ships and barges.
