Intrigued by tales of resilience and community, let’s explore the SDA Church in Brisbane, a beacon of faith that has weathered storms both literal and metaphorical. The SDA Church in Albion, a modest structure with an Art Deco-inspired facade, stands as a testament to a congregation’s enduring spirit. It was erected in June 1939, just before the outbreak of World War II, replacing an earlier timber church relocated from Murgon in 1927. This makes the SDA Church a rare example of interwar Art Deco church architecture in Brisbane. The Seventh-Day Adventist movement first arrived in Brisbane in 1888. Meetings took place in various locations. The congregation on the north side initially gathered in homes and rented spaces. Later, a church was built at Cairns Terrace in Paddington in 1916. This structure was eventually moved to Hammond Street in Red Hill. The Albion SDA Church’s story begins in 1927. The Australasia Conference Association acquired land on McLennan Street. A timber church from Murgon found a new home here, complete with a baptistry and a schoolroom. J. Robinson, an elder, recalled the church’s origins at the dedication ceremony. He spoke of a mission held in a printing workshop in Fortitude Valley in 1919. The new SDA Church building in 1939 could accommodate over 200 people. Built by C. Retschlag and Son for £1,200, the church reflected the Art Deco style popular at the time. Its design incorporated horizontal and vertical lines. A stepped parapet and subtle ornamentation added to its charm. Interestingly, amidst rising international tensions, all Adventist churches in Australia were offered to the government for use in the event of a national emergency. The SDA Church wasn’t just a place of worship. It also housed a primary school that expanded to offer secondary classes in 1939. The school eventually outgrew the site and moved to Zillmere in 1953. The SDA Church building underwent alterations in 1954, likely including the enclosed front porch. Today, the SDA Church continues to serve its community. It remains a symbol of faith and resilience. The church stands as a tangible link to Brisbane’s past.
