Guangzhou calls, a center of learning and innovation. We are standing before the SCUT MOT center. This is part of the South China University of Technology. SCUT is one of China’s key universities. It operates under the State Ministry of Education.

The university is vast. It covers 294 hectares in Guangzhou. This southern metropolitan city is a hub of progress. SCUT has two main campuses. They are the North Campus and the South Campus.

Let’s delve into SCUT’s history. It began as the South China Institute of Technology in 1952. By 1960, SCUT was a key university in China. This recognition marked its importance. In 1981, the State Council authorized SCUT to award degrees. It could confer both doctorates and master’s degrees. SCUT was among the first universities in China to do so.

The South China University of Technology continued to rise. In 1995, China selected SCUT for significant investment. This investment was part of a plan for the 21st century. By 1999, SCUT received an “excellent” rating. This was during an undergraduate teaching assessment. It became one of the first “Excellent Universities of Undergraduate Education”. That same year, a national science park was established.

South China University of Technology has earned high rankings. The Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) consistently places SCUT among the top. In 2023, ARWU ranked SCUT 101-150th globally. The U.S. News & World Report Best Global Universities ranked it 219th in 2023. These rankings reflect SCUT’s commitment to academic excellence.

SCUT boasts notable alumni. Cheng Siwei served as Vice Chairman of The National People’s Congress. Wan Qingliang was the former mayor of Guangzhou City. Lin Shusen served as Governor of Guizhou Province. Chen Ding won gold at the 2012 Summer Olympics. He Jingtang is the Dean of School of Architecture of SCUT. He designed the China Pavilion at the 2010 Shanghai World Expo. Business leaders also hail from SCUT. Yao Zhenhua founded Baoneng Group. Li Dongsheng is the CEO of TCL Corporation. Zhang Zhidong was the former CTO of Tencent. He Xiaopeng co-founded UCWeb Inc. Robin Zeng founded CATL.

The South China University of Technology continues to shape future leaders. Its commitment to innovation remains strong. As we stand here at the SCUT MOT center, we see a glimpse into that future. This is a future built on education, research, and progress.
